What did He go through for us?

Easter.

Sadly, it has become another commercialized holiday.  Even in our churches, it seems to have lost some significance.

Do we even remember what Jesus endured for us?

In remembrance of what Jesus went through for us, I encourage you to read the account again.

Jesus Arrested

47While he was still speaking a crowd came up, and the man who was called Judas, one of the Twelve, was leading them. He approached Jesus to kiss him, 48but Jesus asked him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?”49When Jesus’ followers saw what was going to happen, they said, “Lord, should we strike with our swords?” 50And one of them struck the servant of the high priest, cutting off his right ear.

51But Jesus answered, “No more of this!” And he touched the man’s ear and healed him.

52Then Jesus said to the chief priests, the officers of the temple guard, and the elders, who had come for him, “Am I leading a rebellion, that you have come with swords and clubs? 53Every day I was with you in the temple courts, and you did not lay a hand on me. But this is your hour—when darkness reigns.”

Peter Disowns Jesus

54Then seizing him, they led him away and took him into the house of the high priest. Peter followed at a distance. 55But when they had kindled a fire in the middle of the courtyard and had sat down together, Peter sat down with them. 56A servant girl saw him seated there in the firelight. She looked closely at him and said, “This man was with him.”57But he denied it. “Woman, I don’t know him,” he said.

58A little later someone else saw him and said, “You also are one of them.”
“Man, I am not!” Peter replied.

59About an hour later another asserted, “Certainly this fellow was with him, for he is a Galilean.”

60Peter replied, “Man, I don’t know what you’re talking about!” Just as he was speaking, the rooster crowed. 61The Lord turned and looked straight at Peter. Then Peter remembered the word the Lord had spoken to him: “Before the rooster crows today, you will disown me three times.” 62And he went outside and wept bitterly.

The Guards Mock Jesus

63The men who were guarding Jesus began mocking and beating him. 64They blindfolded him and demanded, “Prophesy! Who hit you?” 65And they said many other insulting things to him.

Jesus Before Pilate and Herod

66At daybreak the council of the elders of the people, both the chief priests and teachers of the law, met together, and Jesus was led before them. 67“If you are the Christ,” they said, “tell us.”Jesus answered, “If I tell you, you will not believe me, 68and if I asked you, you would not answer. 69But from now on, the Son of Man will be seated at the right hand of the mighty God.”

70They all asked, “Are you then the Son of God?”
He replied, “You are right in saying I am.”

71Then they said, “Why do we need any more testimony? We have heard it from his own lips.”

1Then the whole assembly rose and led him off to Pilate. 2And they began to accuse him, saying, “We have found this man subverting our nation. He opposes payment of taxes to Caesar and claims to be Christ, a king.”

3So Pilate asked Jesus, “Are you the king of the Jews?”
“Yes, it is as you say,” Jesus replied.

4Then Pilate announced to the chief priests and the crowd, “I find no basis for a charge against this man.”

5But they insisted, “He stirs up the people all over Judea by his teaching. He started in Galilee and has come all the way here.”

6On hearing this, Pilate asked if the man was a Galilean. 7When he learned that Jesus was under Herod’s jurisdiction, he sent him to Herod, who was also in Jerusalem at that time.

8When Herod saw Jesus, he was greatly pleased, because for a long time he had been wanting to see him. From what he had heard about him, he hoped to see him perform some miracle. 9He plied him with many questions, but Jesus gave him no answer. 10The chief priests and the teachers of the law were standing there, vehemently accusing him. 11Then Herod and his soldiers ridiculed and mocked him. Dressing him in an elegant robe, they sent him back to Pilate. 12That day Herod and Pilate became friends—before this they had been enemies.

13Pilate called together the chief priests, the rulers and the people, 14and said to them, “You brought me this man as one who was inciting the people to rebellion. I have examined him in your presence and have found no basis for your charges against him. 15Neither has Herod, for he sent him back to us; as you can see, he has done nothing to deserve death. 16Therefore, I will punish him and then release him.”

18With one voice they cried out, “Away with this man! Release Barabbas to us!” 19(Barabbas had been thrown into prison for an insurrection in the city, and for murder.)

20Wanting to release Jesus, Pilate appealed to them again. 21But they kept shouting, “Crucify him! Crucify him!”

22For the third time he spoke to them: “Why? What crime has this man committed? I have found in him no grounds for the death penalty. Therefore I will have him punished and then release him.”

23But with loud shouts they insistently demanded that he be crucified, and their shouts prevailed. 24So Pilate decided to grant their demand. 25He released the man who had been thrown into prison for insurrection and murder, the one they asked for, and surrendered Jesus to their will.

The Crucifixion

26As they led him away, they seized Simon from Cyrene, who was on his way in from the country, and put the cross on him and made him carry it behind Jesus. 27A large number of people followed him, including women who mourned and wailed for him. 28Jesus turned and said to them, “Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and for your children. 29For the time will come when you will say, ‘Blessed are the barren women, the wombs that never bore and the breasts that never nursed!’ 30Then
” ‘they will say to the mountains, “Fall on us!”
and to the hills, “Cover us!” ‘31For if men do these things when the tree is green, what will happen when it is dry?”32Two other men, both criminals, were also led out with him to be executed. 33When they came to the place called the Skull, there they crucified him, along with the criminals—one on his right, the other on his left. 34Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, for they do not know what they are doing.”[e] And they divided up his clothes by casting lots.

35The people stood watching, and the rulers even sneered at him. They said, “He saved others; let him save himself if he is the Christ of God, the Chosen One.”

36The soldiers also came up and mocked him. They offered him wine vinegar 37and said, “If you are the king of the Jews, save yourself.”

38There was a written notice above him, which read:  THIS IS THE KING OF THE JEWS.

39One of the criminals who hung there hurled insults at him: “Aren’t you the Christ? Save yourself and us!”

40But the other criminal rebuked him. “Don’t you fear God,” he said, “since you are under the same sentence? 41We are punished justly, for we are getting what our deeds deserve. But this man has done nothing wrong.”

42Then he said, “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.”

43Jesus answered him, “I tell you the truth, today you will be with me in paradise.”

Jesus’ Death

44It was now about the sixth hour, and darkness came over the whole land until the ninth hour, 45for the sun stopped shining. And the curtain of the temple was torn in two. 46Jesus called out with a loud voice, “Father, into your hands I commit my spirit.” When he had said this, he breathed his last.47The centurion, seeing what had happened, praised God and said, “Surely this was a righteous man.” 48When all the people who had gathered to witness this sight saw what took place, they beat their breasts and went away. 49But all those who knew him, including the women who had followed him from Galilee, stood at a distance, watching these things.

Jesus’ Burial

50Now there was a man named Joseph, a member of the Council, a good and upright man, 51who had not consented to their decision and action. He came from the Judean town of Arimathea and he was waiting for the kingdom of God. 52Going to Pilate, he asked for Jesus’ body. 53Then he took it down, wrapped it in linen cloth and placed it in a tomb cut in the rock, one in which no one had yet been laid. 54It was Preparation Day, and the Sabbath was about to begin.

55The women who had come with Jesus from Galilee followed Joseph and saw the tomb and how his body was laid in it. 56Then they went home and prepared spices and perfumes. But they rested on the Sabbath in obedience to the commandment.

Luke 22:47-71 and Luke 23:1-56

Thank God the crucifixion and death of Jesus was not the end.

Sunday is coming!

Send It On Ahead

I have posted before about the concerns I’ve been dealing with as I prepare for our mission trip to Romania.  From leaving my family and going so far away, to being prepared physically and spiritually, to depending on God to provide the financing necessary.  Honestly, the last one has been the hardest for me to deal with.  We are a one income family.  In the last year, we experienced “unplanned job change”.  We have friends that are still walking through the valley of unemployment/underemployment.  The reality of employment and finances is all too real right now.

But, I have to remind myself of something I learned through that whole time last year.

As much as I would like to take credit for it – I do not now and never have provided for my family.

God does and has.

Something I came across a few weeks ago, continues to echo in my mind:

God provided yesterday, what makes today any different?

True.

Why am I so concerned with how God is going to provide?

In the last few days, I have been overwhelmed and humbled at how God has used the generosity of others to help cover the costs of this trip.  A friend bought a couple Beta Version t-shirts (to support the trip), but the check was for more than the total.  I pointed this out to him and he responded.

I know. As my grandfather always told me, “You can’t take it with you, but you can send it on ahead..through missions.”

I pondered (one of my favorite words) that most of yesterday.  When we give, whether it be tithes, donations, clothing, food, etc, that’s exactly what we are doing.  We are sending it on ahead.

18 Tell them to use their money to do good. They should be rich in good works and generous to those in need, always being ready to share with others. 19 By doing this they will be storing up their treasure as a good foundation for the future so that they may experience true life.

1 Timothy 6:18-20 (NLT)

His comment helped me see this part of Timothy in a new light.  We will never see the true results of what we donate, give, tithe (whatever you want to call it).

Maybe the treasure we will see in Heaven will be the “true life” that others get to experience in Heaven with us because of what we gave on earth.

Here’s my challenge. Support your church.  Support missionaries you’ve never met.  Support outreach organizations in your area. Donate to help others in need.

Send it on ahead.

Romania – Status Update

Romania Mission Trip

I wanted to give you a quick update on where things stand related to my trip to Romania later this year.  The fund raising, preparation and prayer continue.  In just over 11 weeks, we will be ‘wheels-up’ on our way to Romania.

But, I have to focus on some big things this week:

  • This Wednesday, our church’s regular Wednesday Night Supper will also be a fundraiser for the trip.  The menu is = potato bar.  If you’re able to make it (REGISTRATION REQUIRED), I’ll be all over serving, cleaning up and thanking everyone.  I will also be selling Beta Version t-shirts during the meal too.  All proceeds will be going toward the Romania trip expenses.
  • Thursday night – Mission team meeting.  Since we don’t all live in the same place, this meeting will be held partially online.  Most team members are located in Florence.  Others of us are located in various other locations.  We will be covering major aspects of the trip.  Planning, training, etc.

So, in addition to work it’ll be a busy week.

We have also had a really big opportunity come up for the trip.  The team has been asked to hold an Experiencing God session while we’re there.  To accomplish this, we will be trying to go through the material between now and when we leave so we are familiar with it again.  Then we have to determine a way to pack it into a short time period.

All in all, please keep praying that God will provide financially, emotionally and most importantly spiritually.

Peace.

Beta Version Gear is Here!

They’re finally here! The Beta Version t-shirts are finally here and available.

Beta Version shirt

I got home from work and there was the box on the front porch.  The full design looks like this.

Beta Version gear!

The front has “Beta Version”.  The back has the following verse:

12 I do not mean that I am already as God wants me to be. I have not yet reached that goal, but I continue trying to reach it and to make it mine. Christ wants me to do that, which is the reason he made me his.

Philippians 3:12 (NCV)

The shirts are $15 plus shipping up to an XL.  Shirts 2XL and larger are $16 plus shipping.  All proceeds will be going toward my mission trip to Romania later this year.

If you choose to buy one, thank you for your support.

Where Have the Men Gone?

As a part of my job, I have the opportunity to spend some significant time behind the wheel.  Over the years, talk radio has become my passenger.  It’s true, I could chase my favorite music across the dial or use my iPod, but I like listening to what people are thinking on various topics.  Listening to many different opinions on a subject will force you to decide where you stand.  One of the shows I listen to is the Tara Servatius show on WBT out of Charlotte.

Yesterday, she discussed an article from Newsweek by George Will called The Basement Boys: The making of modern immaturity. The article focused on “culture of immaturity among the many young men who are reluctant to grow up.”  Some key quotes from the article:

  • Women now receive almost 58 percent of bachelor’s degrees
  • 28 percent of wives between ages 30 and 44 have more education than their husbands
  • only 19 percent of husbands in the same age group have more education than their wives
  • 55 percent of men 18 to 24 are living in their parents’ homes
  • 13 percent of men 25 to 34 are living in their parent’s homes
  • Only 8 percent of women do the same

Additionally, George Will writes:

Gary Cross, a Penn State University historian, wonders, “Where have all the men gone?” His book, Men to Boys: The Making of Modern Immaturity, argues that “the culture of the boy-men today is less a life stage than a lifestyle.” If you wonder what has become of manliness, he says, note the differences between Cary Grant and Hugh Grant, the former, dapper and debonair, the latter, a perpetually befuddled boy.

The discussion on Tara’s show was fascinating.  Men and women of all ages had opinions on what has caused this emerging trend.  The conclusion reached by most listeners was that this is a rising problem.  Men have become more unreliable, less willing to work, more dependent and overall, less willing to emerge from childhood and accept the responsibilities of adulthood.  Callers gave potential reasons ranging from mother-led single households to lax parenting.  In both arguments, the callers stated that boys are not being given strong male role models to learn from.

Something else that concerned me was the number of women callers that expressed the sentiment that they couldn’t count on men today because “they’re all boys”, or “they just won’t grow up”.  Could this be a contributing factor to the increase in single parent households led by women?  I have no idea.  Now, to be clear, I am all for women and girls striving to be the best they can.  This includes going to school, earning a degree and being able to think and act for themselves without HAVING to be dependent on men.  My wife has told me that women are looking for stability and security for their families.  The immature man-child is not going to provide these things.

So, what’s going on?

My opinion?  Expectations.  Or more truthfully, a lack of expectations is one of the root causes.   I believe we have lowered our expectations of what we expect from boys as they become men.  Just look at popular media.  Men are often portrayed as bumbling, immature (even childish) characters.  In many sitcoms, the wives/girlfriends are portrayed as the strong, mature leaders of the households.  To be fair, I’m all for having fun and goofing off – but there is a time when responsibility and maturity should be at the forefront.

At home:

  • Men, are we as dad’s demonstrating to our sons what a strong, responsible figure looks like in the home?
  • Men, are we teaching our sons how to BE men of responsibility and character?
  • Women, are you teaching your children what a strong female figure looks like?
  • Women, are you are you showing your husbands the one thing they need – respect – and ensuring that your sons and daughters see this?
  • Parents, do we have high, low or no expectations of our kids (both sons and daughters)? Kids will live up to the lowest expectation. If we don’t expect much, then they will deliver in equal measure.

Here are the questions I want to discuss with you?

  • Do you agree with the article? Are there men who just refuse to grow up and take on responsibility?
  • What’s causing this?
  • What do we do?

Are We Really Helping Those in Poverty?

I work with the GROW Middle School Ministry at our church.  I can honestly say that there are many times that I know I’ve learned as much or more than the kids have.  Specifically, my wife Michelle and I are responsible for Sunday Nights which are called MIA – Missions In Action.  On these nights,we focus on how we can reach out to those in our community and around the world.

Lately, we’ve been going through a 5 week study called “Hope Lives“.

Both we leaders and the students have gotten so much out of the study. Specifically, the study focuses on poverty around the world and how our attitudes and actions can make a difference.  What I want to share with you came from this past week’s study.

We discussed physical poverty and spiritual poverty.  When we think of poverty, the first thing that comes to mind is someone’s physical condition.  Are they poor?  Are they hungry?  Do they have no clothing?  Do they have no place to live?

But is that the end of their poverty?

What about their spiritual condition? While physical poverty is serious, spiritual poverty is much worse.  Jesus said:

“For what does it profit a man if he gains the whole world and loses or forfeits himself?”

Luke 9:25 (ESV)

One of the activities we did with the Youth hit ME hard.  First, I asked them to write on their left hand a physical need they could help somebody with during the next week.  Then, I asked them to right on their right hand a spiritual need that they could help somebody with during the week.  As we considered those two types of needs,  I asked them to put their hands together as if they were praying.  We then prayed for God’s guidance as we looked for ways to help others around us both physically and spiritually.  But where’s the WOW moment?

When we finished praying, the following thought entered my head which I then shared with the Youth.

“If we only meet someone’s physical needs, then all we do is send a well fed person to Hell.”

That thought has echoed in my mind all week.

Here’s my question.  If we only meet the physical needs, are we simply sending well fed, well dressed, comfortable people to Hell?

Start a Servolution

Servolution - by Dino RizzoOne of the books on my reading list for 2010 was Servolution by Dino Rizzo.   The sub-title is “starting a church revolution through serving.”  A revolution?  Do “churches” need a revolution?  Some may think that is too harsh or controversial of a term.  Others may make the argument that all churches need is a good old fashioned Revival.  I disagree.  My connotation of “Revival” is that you are trying to renew something that has waned.  This may have worked years ago but I believe things have changed and that is why I found Dino Rizzo’s book so refreshing.  In the last few years, I have a growing desire to see churches quit doing church and start being THE church.

In the book, Dino chronicles the efforts of the church he started – Healing Place Church – to carry out Jesus’ example of serving others.  Chapters range from “The Beginning of a Servolution” to “The Culture of Serving” to “Unlocking the Need”.  Each chapter takes you deeper into the thought processes, planning and execution of the strategies Healing Place Church has to serve those in their communities.  But as you will read, it’s not just about serving their communities.    It’s about serving their communities with a passion to change lives!  I really like how he includes detailed examples in each chapter of the joys, stresses and exhaustion that go with each project.  Each time I came away with the understanding that serving the community is not for the weak hearted nor is it for the slightly committed.  To serve others successfully requires a full dependence on God and a commitment to carry the project through while completely leaning on God for guidance and strength.

At the end of each chapter, there are questions designed to help you think through the content of the previous chapter.  This makes the book a perfect planning tool for leadership teams to use as they walk through the process of creating a servolution in their own churches / ministries.  Every community is different as are the gifts and talents within each church or ministry group.

Finally, as Dino makes quite clear, the book is not intended as a reference filled with formulaic solutions to create ministry and outreach opportunities within your own church.  It is designed as a resource guide to help churches / ministries answer the tough questions necessary to change their churches from  just DOING church to BEING the church.

Is your church ready to start a servolution?

Romania Trip Status Update

Piatra Neamt, RomaniaTime is ticking away quickly.  June will be here before I know it and it will be time to board a plane first for Munich, Germany and then on to Bucharest, Romania.  Then, we’ll board a bus for a long ride to Piatra Neamt.  Upon arriving we will have a packed week!  I’m excited, nervous and expectant.

I know this trip will change me as much as anyone and I spend time wondering what that will mean. But, before I even pack the first things in my suitcase there is so much more that has to take place.  Preparation takes place on many levels – spiritual, physical, financial and I’m sure others I haven’t even considered yet.  Whenever someone tells you that preparing for a mission trip will stretch you, they aren’t kidding.  My faith has been tested.

Unfortunately, the primary worry for most people (including me) is, “how will I come up with all that money?”  I too am struggling with that concern.  We are a one income family and the expense of the trip isn’t a part of our normal budget.   The ongoing recession doesn’t help much either.  I believe that this is an area where God is continuing to stretch and grow me and demonstrate to me that He is the true provider for my family.   From job loss to unexpected expenses to increases in insurance and other costs, God shows me each time that I just need to let go.  Since I decided to go to Romania, I have just been in awe about how God has provided in unexpected ways to defray the cost of the trip.

Even with these unexpected funds, I still believe firmly in working to raise funds in whatever ways I can to pay for my trip.  So, brainstorming with my wife, I will be doing various things between now and June to raise the additional funds needed.

Fund Raising Events and Activities

  • March 24 – Wednesday Night Supper at RRBC with proceeds going towards my trip (Registration requiredregister starting Sunday March 21) Menu = potato bar
  • April (date TBD due to weather) – Garage sale in the parking lot at RRBC.
  • Anytime – PC repairs, clean-up and upgrades (by donation of your choice)
  • Anytime – purchase a Beta Version t-shirt.  Check out the design and costs.
  • Anytime – Video projects i.e. photo montage memory DVD’s, etc.

Most of all, please continue to pray for our team as we prepare.  Please pray for safety, protection for us as we travel, serve and return.  Also, please pray for our families that we will be leaving for a while – for their safety.

My International Missions Opportunity – Romania

This post originally appeared at my first (and still active) blog earlier this year.   I’m re-posting it here because I really can’t think of a better way to restate what I had already written.

** Begin repost **

As many of you know, I will be going to Romania in June with my dad – specifically June 10-21. He is the Director of Missions for the Florence Baptist Association and has been leading trips to Piatra Neamt in the Northeast corner of Romania for nearly 10 years.

Some of the things under consideration for our team to do include:

  • Medical/evangelism
    • Witnessing in clinics
    • Taking blood pressures
    • Registering people
    • Working in the pharmacy
  • Children’s work like Bible clubs
  • Light construction
  • Negotiating the possibility of trying to help a small struggling church.

If any of you have gone on an International mission trip, then you know that they can be expensive. So, I’m in the process of raising funds to cover the cost for the trip. God has provided so many unexpected sources of funding so far – but I have a way to go yet.

I’ll be doing several things to raise funds.

  • Selling T-shirts for my new website (which has yet to launch www.thebetaversion.org). The site will do a number of things including providing updates on this mission trip and other mission/outreach related projects throughout the year.

    • We just finished final edits on the shirts, so if you’ve previously told me you’d like a shirt, please tell me again so I can get an accurate count.
    • Shirts are $15 for sizes S-XL plus any necessary shipping. 2X and larger are $1 more.
    • To buy a shirt, contact me using the call widget in the right hand column or email me GsimmonsSC (at) gmail (dot) com
    • Click on the image below for a larger image.
    • If you have a promotional need – please call Shawn at OurShirtsDontSuck.com It’s a GREAT company to work with.

  • PC repairs, upgrades, etc – If you need your machine cleaned up (viruses, spyware, malware), or need help with hardware changes, I will be glad to help with these for a donation. Donation will be up to you. I can also help you setup wireless networks, connect game systems to the web (Wii, etc), help you setup Netflix streaming, etc
  • Video projects – Have you been wanting to put photos into a memory DVD video? I can help you create the kind of project you’re looking for. This includes color correction and balancing of aging or faded photos.
  • Yard sale – I will be holding a yard sale later in the Spring – date to follow. Please let me know if you have items to donate or would like to buy some of these “hidden treasures”. :)

Of course, if you’re not local to Rock Hill…then the second and third bullets may not apply.

If you can help by letting me help you, then THANK YOU!

But, most importantly, pray for our team as we prepare for the trip later this year and THANK YOU for those prayers.
