Wednesday – Clinics Day 3…and it rained

We got up this morning to a cloudy, cool day.  After so many hot days, it was refreshing to walk outside. There was a thick cloud cover and a forecast for rain.  We prayed for good weather and successful days at the clinic.

Our team was assigned to the small community church at Bodesti.  This was a small wooden structure sitting effectively in an old man’s yard behind his house and next to his livestock area.  As with the other clinics, people were already waiting in this small courtyard area.

In this location, the children’s workers had to walk through the livestock area to get to a part of the pasture where we were allowed to work.  We had very specific boundaries between the garden, a haystack and the livestock area.  We even improvised a shelter with the parachute in case it rained before we needed it for games.

In the afternoon, it began to rain.  The pharmacy needed a cover to prevent the medicines from getting wet so we lost our parachute.   So, we gathered the children together under a tree and sang, told them the story of Philip and went back over our earlier story about Jarius.

The coolest and most worshipful part of the day happened at the very end.

It was pouring down rain

We had huddled together in a group with about 5 children.  The others had left due to the rain.  Under two umbrellas, Irina was playing “How Great is Our God” while fighting a losing battle trying to keep rain out of the guitar.  We as leaders were singing in four part harmony while the children were huddled in the middle. Irina and Bettina were singing in Romanian and Miranda, my niece, and I were singing in English.  Stefan, a little boy that had been there most of the day, put his arm around me and just looked up at us while we sang.  It was a wonderful, worshipful moment.

Then the rain and thunder got heavier and the adults came to get the children.  Stefan started to leave with his umbrella but then he suddenly turned around and said that he wanted to pray. Just like the day before, it turned out that he didn’t know HOW to pray, so Irina led him in a prayer and then she helped a few other children to pray.

What an awesome way to end the day! I can’t wait to see what tomorrow brings.

Tuesday – Clinics Day 2

Today was another tiring but great day!

Instead of working at one location, our team was split into two teams working in two different villages.  Our team went to Bicaz Ardelean, the same church we were at on Sunday.  The other team went to Damuc.  Between the two locations our teams saw 327 patients and had 18 professions of faith!  According to our Romanian counterparts, this is a new record for the number of people seen.

But, there is a downside to this many patients.  We have run out of several medicines. We are working on a method to resupply those medicines so that we can continue to meet the medical needs of those that come to the clinics.  Please pray that the monies and the supplies will come together.  The clinics are being overwhelmed by those needing to see a doctor and get help.

Initially, I was to work doing evangelism in the clinics.  But, our location was extremely busy so my translator was pulled off to do some coordination.  This actually ended up being great.  I helped with the children’s ministry. I was so blessed by working with those kids. They are so amazing and wonderful. Playing games with them, going through lessons and listening to them ask questions was so cool.

The most powerful thing for me today came from a little girl named Elena.  At the end of the day, we were going back over the story of Zacchaeus.  Irina, our Romanian counterpart with the children, was linking this story back to how we should be seeking Jesus. She then began using the rest of the volunteer leaders as examples.  She turned to me and asked me, “Greg, do you want to learn more about Jesus.”

I replied, “Yes, of course.”

She then turned to the kids and asked (in Romanian), “Who would like to pray for Greg to learn more about Jesus?”

This sweet little girl Emma quickly raised her hand.  Irina asked a few more questions and then asked Emma if she was ready to pray. Emma suddenly turned shy. After a short discussion, Irina was able to learn that Emma didn’t know HOW to pray.

She had never prayed by herself, much less out loud. She said she didn’t know what words to use.

So, Irina asked her if she would pray by repeating what Irina said.  She agreed but only if her brother would also pray.

Irina began praying and this sweet little voice began praying for me.  Tears came to my eyes as I realized that this little girl from Romania was praying her first prayer out loud and it was for me.  It was so humbling.

Remember

Memorial Day has become the unofficial starting holiday to the summer season.

The original purpose of the day was to stop and remember those who have paid the ultimate price for our freedom.

Please stop and pray for the families of those who have fought to defend freedom.

Romania Update – post yard sale

Sorry for not providing an update in quite a while.   Things have just been a whirlwind lately.

I’m busy at work trying to get some things in place before I head overseas.  Plus, we’re trying to finalize all the details related to the Romania trip.

That’s where the good news comes in!

The Yard Sale was a HUGE success.  Thankfully, the Yard Sale was the same day as a bake sale and car wash also being held at the church.  Each of our events drew traffic which benefited the other groups.  So how huge was the success of the Yard Sale?

We had people stopping by and buying things as we were setting up.  At then end of the day, we had earned enough to cover the remaining cost related to the trip!!

SO….a HUGE THANK YOU to those that donated materials, bought items or simply made financial donations!!  Your support means so much and I cannot wait to share with you about the trip and the lives that will be impacted.

Beyond the Yard Sale, a number of individuals have donated specifically for medical supplies.  The cost of the medical supplies is the single largest expense for the trip – and one of the most important.  Thank you to those that felt led to help with these expenses.  So many people will be helped in the medical clinics.

Now…we’re in the final countdown!

June 10 is just around the corner.

Now we’re packing, finalizing supplies, confirming travel plans and tying up loose ends.  As a side note, due to the continued activity of the Iceland volcano (which I will not even try to spell here), the leadership decided to purchase travel insurance for the team members.  This will cover travel disruptions and provide us with food, lodging and flight assistance if the volcano begins erupting and closes airports throughout Europe. Please pray that we’ll have safe travel to, during and back from Europe.

Thanks again for all your support and prayer.

The Sunday Blueprint

This “trailer” was put together by North Point Community Church.  If you’re involved with the planning or technical parts of a Sunday service, it’s hilarious.

I think it’s convicting at the same time.

Have we created a blueprint for our worship / teaching experiences?

What do you think?

Am I prepared for the mission trip to Romania yet?

Simply….no.

I’m not just talking about the fund raising either – God will provide.

I’ve done several different types of mission trips.  From beach missions to storm cleanup to construction.  Each of these had their own challenges – logistics, materials, witnessing training, ministering to people on site and then some follow-up.

This trip to Romania will be a little different.

I’ve never done a mission trip before where the focus will be on medical clinics.

Neither have I been on a mission trip where the primary language will be one other than English.

I may even have to speak.  While I teach Youth on a weekly basis, this will be different.

The cultural differences will be significant and I may be asked to do things that I don’t normally do.

Am I nervous? Yes.

Tonight, while cutting the grass, I listened to a podcast by Andy Stanley from North Point Community Church that had been sitting on my mp3 player for quite a while.  The title of the podcast is “Go Fish: We Were All Fish Once”.  In this particular message series Andy made a point that I needed to hear.

He was talking about when Jesus called the first of His disciples. From Mark 1:16-20:

16 As Jesus walked beside the Sea of Galilee, he saw Simon and his brother Andrew casting a net into the lake, for they were fishermen.  17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

18 At once they left their nets and followed him.
19 When he had gone a little farther, he saw James son of Zebedee and his brother John in a boat, preparing their nets.

20 Without delay he called them, and they left their father Zebedee in the boat with the hired men and followed him.

Andy had been talking about how people make all kinds of excuses for not “fishing” – aka telling people about Jesus.  Such as:

  • I’m too young.
  • I’m too old.
  • I don’t speak well
  • I don’t have a dramatic story.
  • My life was so messed up people will think I’m a hypocrite

But here was the point that Andy made that hit me.  What did Jesus say when he called Simon and Andrew?

17 “Come, follow me,” Jesus said, “and I will make you fishers of men.”

So simple. Jesus said, “follow me and I will make you…”  He didn’t call men that knew how to be fishers of men.

Wow.

Make v. -To cause to exist or happen; bring about; create:

I may not know exactly how to do some of the things He will be asking me to do in Romania.  I won’t know how to do things He asks me to do in the future. That’s ok.

If I follow Jesus, He will make me into what He needs me to be.

Hat tip to @cwhisonant for this idea! Today’s date is PERFECT for Easter – if you’re a geek!

Easter is April 4, 2004 aka 4-04!

For those a little less geeky, have you ever tried to go to a website that didn’t come up.  You get the error ’404 Page Not Found’

He is Risen!

From Luke 24:1-11

But on the first day of the week, at early dawn, they went to the tomb, taking the spices they had prepared. And they found the stone rolled away from the tomb, 3but when they went in they did not find the body of the Lord Jesus. While they were perplexed about this, behold, two men stood by them in dazzling apparel. And as they were frightened and bowed their faces to the ground, the men said to them, “Why do you seek the living among the dead? He is not here, but has risen. Remember how he told you, while he was still in Galilee, that the Son of Man must be delivered into the hands of sinful men and be crucified and on the third day rise.” And they remembered his words, and returning from the tomb they told all these things to the eleven and to all the rest. Now it was Mary Magdalene and Joanna and Mary the mother of James and the other women with them who told these things to the apostles, but these words seemed to them an idle tale, and they did not believe them. But Peter rose and ran to the tomb; stooping and looking in, he saw the linen cloths by themselves; and he went home marveling at what had happened.

He is Risen!

Update – Reboot – Repeat

Dilbert.com

Oh what a familiar situation.  If you have ever used technology, you’ve dealt with the updating, rebooting, upgrading, rebooting again, updating the plugins, rebooting, updating the update….we’ve all been there.  The frustrating part is that we can spend minutes if not hours simply upgrading and updating our software but not getting any real work done.  Yes, we are busy.  But, we aren’t busy getting done what we need to get done (unless of course you are an IT person responsible for hardware/software maintenance).

Is the same thing true with our spiritual lives?

What about our ministries?

What about our churches?

Do we get caught up in the update/upgrade cycle and, in the process, get nothing done?

Personally it can be getting the latest <device> app for personal study, a new study bible, a new study plan, a new web app and on and on.

For ministries and churches it can be the latest Youth program, children’s program, more – better – bigger sound/lighting, web presences, web tools, eye-opening/edgy material and on and on.

To be clear, I am not saying that any of these are bad things.

Focus is the problem.

Like Wally, we can become focused on the process and not the outcome.  We can become focused on the tools and not the target.  Does God want us to have the best tools, resources and stuff or does He want us to have the best relationship with Him?  Does He want our ministries and churches focused on the “process” of ministering or the people He wants us to reach?

For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.  – Galatians 1:10 ESV

What do you think?

Do You Live Like It’s Worth It?

The movie To Save a Life came out in the last few months.  I so badly wanted to go see it, but my work and family schedule prevented me from going to see it while it was in the theater.  Several of our Youth at church did get to see it and have told me it was awesome.  In a nutshell, the movie is about Jake – a high school student with the “perfect” life.  He was an athlete, popular and had everything going for him.  Then a friend from his past commits suicide in the hallway at school.  This sends Jake into a mental tailspin as he questions everything.

I received some leader resources with the following clip which, based on those materials, is a scene from a key point in the movie.

Did you catch that?  Jake asks the Youth Minister “Suppose I don’t want to settle, is it worth it?”

What if a student, a friend, a family member, a stranger asked you that question about your walk with Christ?

Could you answer it?

Could you really?

Honestly?

How would you answer it?

Is the first answer that came to mind the one you expected?

Do you really believe or are you a faker?
