This past weekend, I helped with the media for Big Weekend at New River Community Church (NRCC). What is Big Weekend? Big Weekend is a student ministry (6-12 grades) retreat – but it's held on site at NRCC. Students have large general sessions at the North Campus and then their growth group leaders take them through more in depth discussion during small group time at the campus or in one of the host homes. This is truly an amazing event where the kids have an opportunity to break away from all the distractions they may have at home (friends, family, homework, xbox, Playstation, cable, Netflix, – get the idea??) and focus on their relationship with God.
The main point behind Big Weekend this year was Purpose. What a timely topic for students these days. Students face more competition for their attention than I did. Social media swamps them, constantly beggin for attention. Pop culture media focuses on a shallow portrayal of what the "perfect life" should be. It is easy to see how students today can have a hard time really knowing what their purpose in life is.
Beyond the challenging sessions and discussions, these kids know how to worship! Over 100 students singing and worshipping their heads off…sweet.
